Alyssa McCann

Alyssa brought a lot of fun and creativity to the Hope’s Beacon Counseling team when she joined us in September 2023. She’s caring, compassionate, curious, and has a great sense of humor. Alyssa is kind, optimistic, patient, and always eager to learn. She’s also incredibly loyal and respectful. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, crocheting, putting together puzzles, and painting.

Alyssa earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Wyoming and her Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. She understands that counseling can feel intimidating, and vulnerability can be tough, which is why she works hard to create a safe, comforting environment for everyone she works with. As she puts it, “Knowing firsthand how important the connection with your counselor is drives me to foster an open and supportive space where you can feel safe sharing your story.”

Alyssa uses a variety of therapeutic approaches and specializes in challenges such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, and behavioral issues. She has experience working with children (ages 4 and up), teens, young adults, and families.

What led you to become a counselor?

I chose to become a counselor because of my own experiences growing up with mental health struggles and receiving counseling support throughout my life. Having experienced firsthand how a positive therapeutic relationship can truly make a difference inspired me to pursue this career. Mental health challenges take many different forms, and understanding that each person’s experience is unique motivates me to keep learning new skills to connect with and support others in a deeper, more meaningful way.

What is your counseling style, and what will our first session together be like?

I know firsthand how intimidating counseling can feel, so I strive to make the first session as comfortable as possible by letting clients know we’ll move at their pace. The initial session is really about getting to know you as a person—the struggles you’ve been facing, how they’ve impacted you, and the goals you’re hoping to achieve in therapy. By understanding you better, I can connect with you and create a plan that will help you work toward those goals. You’re in the driver’s seat during our sessions, and I’m here to help guide the way.

What can I expect when working with you?

When working with me, you can expect a welcoming space where you can share whatever you’re comfortable with—whether it’s struggles or successes—without fear of judgment. I’ll offer compassion and connection, ensuring you feel supported throughout the process.
