Maria has been a valued member of the Hope’s Beacon Counseling team since 2020. When asked about the values that resonate most with her, she mentioned ambition, belonging, compassion, financial stability, friendship, future generations, gratitude, leadership, parenting, and risk-taking. In her free time, Maria enjoys cooking, spending time with loved ones, watching TV, reading, and taking walks. She also has a beloved cat named Bananas, who is a big part of her life.
A Wyoming native and a second-generation American of Korean and Colombian descent, Maria earned her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Wyoming and her Master of Social Work from the University of Central Florida. She entered the field of social work because of her passion for helping others and her deep care for her community. Maria is particularly committed to advancing support for BIPOC mental health and well-being. As she puts it, “I strive to provide a warm and affirming space where you can explore your perspectives, values, and feelings, and build resiliency.”
Maria’s areas of focus include LGBTQ+ issues and trauma. She has significant experience working with emotional regulation, relationship challenges, domestic violence, divorce, depression, and anxiety. Maria works with children ages 8 and older, adolescents, adults, families, and couples, and also incorporates EMDR as a therapeutic modality.
What led you to become a counselor?
My passion for social work was driven by a deep desire to engage with and support my community. I’ve been particularly moved by social issues like immigration reform, LGBTQ+ rights, and the fight against anti-Asian hate. Over time, I became increasingly aware of the challenges within the social work and mental health fields that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, and I felt compelled to use my privileges to help be part of the solution
What is your counseling style, and what will our first session together be like?
My approach is relaxed, supportive, and nonjudgmental. I focus on building a strong connection and trust with you, aiming to be a supportive member of your “village.” While our first session will be about gathering information, it’s also an opportunity for me to get to know you better and for you to understand my approach as well.
What can I expect when working with you?
When working with me, you can expect sessions that are structured around the goals we set together. You’ll also have space to talk about your interests, hobbies, and everyday life. I’ll meet you where you’re at, ready to guide and support you through the process.
What is it about Hope’s Beacon’s values and priorities that you really connect with?
What I really appreciate about Hope’s Beacon Counseling is how dedicated they are to both their clients and the local mental health community. They truly prioritize the well-being of their clinicians, which allows us to show up fully and be there for our clients.
