Your First Therapy Appointment: What to Expect (and What Not to Worry About)

Booking a first therapy appointment takes real courage — and then the anticipation sets in. What do I say? What will they ask? What if I cry? Here's exactly what to expect, so the unknown doesn't get to play villain.

Before You Arrive

After you book with us, you'll get some intake paperwork — basic history, what's bringing you in, insurance details. Doing it ahead of time means your first session is spent talking, not filling out forms. Our office is at 2617 E. Lincolnway, Suite G in Cheyenne — in the brick building between McDonald's and Clure Brothers. Come through the main doors on the west side, through two sets of double doors, and take the stairs on your right.

If you've chosen telehealth, you'll get a secure video link instead. Find a private spot, grab a coffee, and log in a few minutes early.

The First Session Is a Conversation, Not an Interrogation

Your counselor's first job is to understand you — not to diagnose you in the first ten minutes. Expect questions like: What's bringing you in now? How long has this been going on? What does support look like in your life? What do you want to be different?

You set the pace. If there's something you're not ready to talk about, say so. "I'm not ready to go there yet" is a completely acceptable sentence in therapy — and a good therapist will respect it.

Yes, You Might Cry. That's Fine.

People apologize for crying in therapy constantly. Please don't. Tissues are on the table for a reason, and there is nothing you could feel in that room that your counselor hasn't sat with before.

Questions to Ask Your Therapist

The first session goes both ways — you're deciding whether this person is a fit for you, too. Fair game: How would you approach something like what I'm dealing with? How often would we meet? How will we know it's working?

What Happens After

At the end of the first session, your counselor will usually share initial thoughts and suggest a plan — how often to meet and what you'll work on first. Most people leave their first session feeling lighter than they expected. Not fixed — that's not how it works — but relieved that the hardest step is behind them.
